If you've never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take:
- Starting from the Walpole Public Library, head west on Stone St, then turn left onto Main. Just before you get to Dunkin' Donuts, turn left into Bristol Square. We're in the corner of the big building, at 1428 Main St STE 1.
- If you're closer to the Norfolk Public Library, head east on Main St, then turn right onto Clark St. Turn left onto Main St (a different Main St), and continue until you have barely passed Dunkin'. At that point, turn right into our parking lot.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Walpole's story begins with its early sawmill industry along the Neponset River, where Joshua Fisher and Major Eleazer Lusher established the area's first mill in what is now the Walpole Town Forest. After years of petitioning, residents of this sawmill village successfully separated from Dedham in May 1724, naming their new town after Sir Robert Walpole.
The community played an active role in the American Revolution, sending 157 men to the Battle of Lexington and Concord under Captain Seth Bullard in 1775. The town continued to demonstrate its patriotic spirit by dispatching 65 minutemen to defend Newport Harbor, Rhode Island in 1777.
Following the Revolutionary War, Walpole experienced significant growth. The Neponset River powered numerous mills producing cotton, lumber, and paper, with the notable Bird Company establishing a large complex in East Walpole. By 1860, the population had grown to 1,935 residents, and the Norfolk County railroad connected the town to Boston and New York City.
Cultural and civic institutions flourished during this period. Walpole's first public library was founded in 1872 by Mary R. Bird, and Union Congregational Church was established in 1877. The town adopted its distinctive seal in 1914, featuring the historic sawmill that sparked the community's development. In 1932, Harriet Nevins donated Blackburn Hall to honor her parents, a beautiful neo-classical building that continues to serve the community today.
